Benidorm puts an end to the smelly beach-side water leaks

For years now, Benidorm beachgoers have been putting up with a disgusting sewage smell wafting from the drains right on the front line of Playa Levante but sunbathing promises to be more pleasant going forward.

Benidorm City Council has this week completed the work of replacing a damaged section of the wastewater pipes along Avenida de Madrid, which they assure will prevent stinky effluence running onto the beach every time there is heavy rain.

The job was given a budget of 94,710 euros and began last December. The work covers 150 metres of drainage from the Torre Principado building to Ametlla de Mar avenue, according to Councillor José Ramón González de Zárate.

He explained that the drainage problems were caused not only by the age of the sewage system, but by its design, which didn’t have enough slope to force the water away and was prone to clogging. Instead, “when there is rain with a certain intensity we have seen that it came out of the sewers and accumulated on the promenade and the beach”.

In the end, the job was quite a straightforward one and caused minimal disruption to traffic, pedestrians or beachgoers since the work was carried out during the low season.

This project will be complemented by another action that has been “highly demanded for years” and will be the responsibility of the Public Wastewater Sanitation Entity (EPSAR) in the first quarter of this year.

“It will be carried out when the flow of wastewater is the lowest possible and will consist of changing all the old pumping stations on Avenida del Mediterráneo to Ametlla de Mar, thereby improving not only energy savings but also economic savings and preventing these waters from ending up on the beach,” he explained.
