Torrevieja launches citywide campaign to promote pet identification

The Costa Blanca hub hopes to encourage responsible ownership and reduce the number of abandoned pets

Torrevieja City Council’s Department of Animal Protection has launched a new awareness campaign aimed at promoting the proper identification and sterilisation of companion animals, which includes dogs, cats and ferrets.

The campaign highlights the vital importance of ensuring pets are microchipped and properly registered, steps that significantly increase the chances of reuniting lost animals with their owners in the event of escape.

Hundreds of unidentified animals, particularly cats, arrive at the Municipal Shelter each year. Without identification, many are unable to return to their homes.

The authorities are placing special emphasis on the importance of neutering and spaying and microchipping all cats over six months old. While this is now a legal requirement since the Animal Welfare Law was updated, the council also reminds owners that these simple measures could prevent their beloved pet from becoming part of one of the city’s many feral feline colonies.

With Torrevieja’s high volume of international residents and tourists who travel with pets, the campaign also reminds non-local pet owners that their animals must be registered in the Valencian Community’s pet database (RIVIA) to ensure owners can be contacted if their pet goes missing.

According to Councillor for Animal Protection Concha Sala, this awareness campaign aims "to do everything possible to raise awareness among pet owners that identification is one of the fundamental pillars for eradicating animal abandonment and building a more just, empathetic and respectful society."

The campaign is now visible across the city on billboards and public display panels, as well as in veterinary clinics, pet stores and council offices.
