ARCHIVED - Three convicted of faking a common-law marriage in Almeria to obtain residency in Spain
Two men and a woman have been sentenced in Andalucía for pretending that the latter was the common-law partner of one of the males

A judge in Almería has sentenced two men and a woman for faking a common-law marriage so that one of the males could stay in Spain, circumventing the legislation on foreigners' stay in the country and registering him in a house without the owner's permission.
Back in 2017, one of the men and co-accused woman agreed to allow a Moroccan without residence in Spain to register as a common-law partner of the Spanish citizen, in return for cash, so that the foreigner could obtain a residence card as a family member of an EU resident.
This is turn would mean he would be able to stay in the country "legally and evade the legal requirements on foreigners", according to the court ruling.
The Spanish man, who lived in a rented flat in Almería, drafted and signed "without the consent or knowledge" of the owner, a document which confirmed the fake couple were registered in the house.
Using this false authorisation, the accused managed to get Almería City Council to officially register them and provide the necessary documents to be able to register in the Registry of Domestic Partnerships.
Shortly afterwards, they appeared at the council offices to register, but in the meantime, the Junta de Andalucía had uncovered "evidence of the lack of veracity of the data provided by the supposed couple".
The three defendants appeared in court and have been sentenced to six months each in prison for the falsification of official documents, suspended for two years. They were also individually fined 720 euros.
In addition, the two defendants who charged the Moroccan to "irregularly legalise his situation in Spain" were each fined a further 360 euros for the crime of facilitating illegal immigration.
