ARCHIVED - This is the cheapest supermarket in the Region of Murcia
By choosing the right store to do the food shopping, you can save more than 1,000 euros a year, according to the Organisation of Consumers and Users

The rise in energy prices has brought with it an increase in the price of many products in shops in Spain, and the government has now made it legal for supermarkets to ration the sale of certain items to avoid panic buying and shortages.
The latest figures for the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in the Region of Murcia don’t actually take into account the consequences of the war in Ukraine, but even so this indicator of inflation rose by 1.5% in one year, up to 7.6%, which is the highest rate in almost 36 years.
Increases in electricity prices, heating oil, fuel and more have impacted the cost of products in stores like vegetables, milk, cheese, eggs and bread. In its annual report on the cheapest and most expensive places to do the food shopping in Spain, the Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU) has revealed what is the cheapest supermarket in the Region of Murcia.
In any case, shoppers in Murcia have it easier than most, as the OCU points out that it is the cheapest region to do the food shopping in Spain, along with the Valencian Community.
The most expensive supermarkets in Spain are in the Balearic Islands, followed by the Canary Islands, the Basque Country and Catalonia.
But where is the cheapest place to buy food in Murcia?
The cheapest supermarket in the Region of Murcia
According to the OCU’s latest study, the cheapest shop in the Murcia Region has turned out to be the Alcampo hypermarket.
After Alcampo, the cheapest supermarkets in other locations are Consum and Mercadona, together with others such as Dani, Cash Fresh, Supeco, Tifer, Family Cash and +Ahorro.
Carrefour is far behind Alcampo and Mercadona, and is at the more expensive end.
Depending on where you choose to shop, says the OCU, “very significant savings” can be made – up to 1,073 euros on average per year and more than 3,500 euros in some places.
