The Palacio de los Condes de San Julián in Lorca
A fortress-like family residence in the historic centre of Lorca
The Casa de los Condes de San Julián is one of the many palatial residences which were built by wealthy aristocratic families in past centuries in Lorca, earning the city the nickname of “La Ciudad de los Cien Escudos (the city of the 100 coats of arms).
This home was originally built in the 17th century as the residence of the Pérez de Meca family, but has since been modified, reformed and restored on many occasions. In 1847 Antonio Pérez de Meca y Muso was awarded the title of Conde de San Julián by Queen Isabel II, hence the name by which his home is now known.
The façade of the building gives it something of the appearance of a fortress, and over the main door the coat of arms of its owners, a replica of the original emblem which is housed on a turret, is supported by the figures of two lions. The military air is added to by the merlons and arched windows which were added in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The Casa de los Condes de San Julián is located in the heart of the old centre of Lorca, just a stone’s throw from the Teatro Guerra, the Plaza de Calderón de la Barca, the Palacio Guevara and the embroidery museum of the Paso Azul. In fact, part of the area occupied by the Plaza de Calderón de la Barca was originally adjoined as a garden to the residence.
The house can only be viewed externally.
