ARCHIVED - The burning of Don Carnal signals the end of Carnival in Mazarron

The start of Lent was commemorated by the ceremony for the first time in years in Mazarrón

On Shrove Tuesday (February 21), for the first time in many years, the traditional ceremonial burning of the figure of Don Carnal was held in Mazarrón, signalling the beginning of Lent and 40 days before the start of Easter Week.

The ceremony took place in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, theoretically putting an end to the days of revelry under the stewardship of Don Carnal as he gave way to Doña Cuaresma and the abstinence of Lent, and was attended by the 2023 children’s Carnival Muses and the Carnival Queen, Francisca Méndez Barcelona.
