The incumbent Mayor of Malaga, Francisco de la Torre, has confirmed his intentions to run yet again for the mayorship, in a move that has seen him dubbed ‘the Benjamin Button of Spanish politics’.

De la Torre, who was recently awarded an honorary OBE by the British Ambassador in Spain for his services in promoting UK-Spanish relations, will turn 80 years old this year, but has assured that he is not “afraid of his age”.

At a press conference on Tuesday September 20, Mayor De la Torre announced that he would be running in the 2023 elections in the exact same place where he announced his candidacy for the 2019 elections, in the gardens next to the Ayuntamiento City Hall building.

De la Torre has said that he will run with “enthusiasm” because “giving up is not [his] style”, and that he still feels the same youthful “passion” as he ever did.

The elections will take place in May 2023, and any expat resident in Spain for more than 3 years who is on the electoral roll may vote.
