ARCHIVED - Teenager suffers serious head injuries after jumping off a cliff into the sea in Cartagena

The 17-year-old landed in shallow waters at Cabo Flores in the Region of Murcia

A teenager is in a serious condition after jumping off a cliff into the sea at Cabo Flores in Cartagena and hitting his head against the rocks.

The 17-year-old sustained serious craniocerebral trauma after plunging into shallow water and smashing his head during the early hours of Sunday morning, July 24.

The Region of Murcia's Emergency Coordination Centre 112 was alerted to the tragedy just before 2am, by friends who were with the young victim when he jumped.

A fire crew from the Fire and Rescue Service of the City of Cartagena, a patrol of the Local Police, and a Mobile Emergency Unit (UME) were rushed to the scene where they located the badly wounded teen in a spot which was impossible to access by land.

Firefighters managed to rescue the young male by sea and once he was pulled from the water and attended to by medics, he was transferred by ambulance to the Santa Lucía hospital in Cartagena where he remains in a "serious condition".

Just a week earlier, a pensioner lost his life at Playa de los Nietos beach in Cartagena. The 75-year-old was pulled from the water unconscious and despite trying to revive him with CPR for 10 minutes, there was no response and paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.
