ARCHIVED - Swiss woman arrested in San Isidro, Alicante for abandoning newborn baby
The woman left the baby by the side of the road in San Isidro, near Almoradi in the Vega Baja area of Alicante province

A 39-year-old Swiss woman has been arrested and charged with child abandonment in San Isidro after her newborn baby was found on a roadside near a derelict building in which she had given birth moments earlier.
A lorry driver called the Guardia Civil after spotting a woman walking with blood on her legs and carrying a bundle of blankets in her arms. The man told police he was convinced that he had seen the tiny limb of what he believed to be a baby inside the blankets.
Officers from Almoradí station rushed to the scene, an open field next to an industrial estate in San Isidro, where they found a woman "who appeared to be well".

She strongly denied the lorry driver's version of events and refused to be assisted by a medical team who had also been despatched.
Unconvinced, officers accompanied the woman to the derelict house where she had reportedly spent the night, and "after inspecting the area exposed to direct sunlight", discovered a bundle of blankets rolled up behind drums about 100 metres from the house.
Inside, police discovered the newborn baby who still had the umbilical cord attached. Although showing signs of dehydration, the newborn was thankfully "breathing normally and appeared to be fine".
The baby is being cared for at a nearby hospital after being admitted to a neonatal unit, and a court has ordered the mother's imprisonment whilst an investigation is carried out.
