ARCHIVED - Summer heat returns this weekend: Spain weather outlook August 18-21
Rising temperatures and clear skies forecast for most of Spain in the coming days

After several days of respite when the thermometers across Spain dipped lower than usual for this time of year, the storm has passed and the heat will return this weekend, continuing well into next week.
The north of the country has experienced some torrential rain and although the worst has passed, several storms are lingering on Thursday August 18, particularly in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, with very intense gusts of wind and the possibility of hail. There are weather warnings for rain and storms in the Balearic Islands, Catalonia and Navarra, while the Basque Country is under a red level alert.
Come Friday August 19, a high pressure front influenced by an Atlantic anticyclone will wash over Spain. From this point on, the “rains and storms will disappear in practically all areas and the sun will shine with rising temperatures and a fully summery atmosphere," according to Ruben Del Campo, Aemet spokesperson.
The exception will be Catalonia, with overcast skies and some light rain while the day will be clear in the rest of the country. The temperatures will remain relatively stable in the south but a dramatic change is expected in northern Spain, with the thermometers rising 6°C or 8°C compared to previous days.
Yellow warnings for rough seas have been issued in Andalucia, the Balearic Islands and Catalonia.
Temperatures will continue to rise on Saturday August 20 with clear skies in almost all of Spain, except in the Bay of Biscay and in mountain areas. Here, the development of daytime clouds could lead to an isolated storm. The thermometers will easily exceed 32°C in the interior of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands, while the mercury should climb to 35°C in the south of Galicia, the Ebro valley, eastern Catalonia, the interior of the Valencian Community and Murcia, and in the south and centre of the country in general.
Little change is expected on Sunday August 21, although “there will be more compact cloudiness than on Saturday morning,” according to Mr Del Campo. In addition, some morning mist is expected on the Mediterranean coast. Temperatures will be similar to the day before, high once more with the exception of northern Spain, where they will fall in the Basque Country, Navarra, La Rioja and the northeast of Castilla y León.
