Traffic diversions around Torre Pacheco while work to create new rail link is underway
The Murcia-Cartagena high-speed rail link is moving ahead apace with the construction of four new overpasses near Torre Pacheco

Spanish rail operator company Adif Alta Velocidad (Adif AV) is making progress in the works to create the high-speed train connection between Murcia city and Cartagena, and is currently tackling a new phase in the section from Riquelme, in the Murcian municipality of Sucina, to the municipality of Torre Pacheco.
This phase consists of the construction of four new overpasses on the RM-19, RM-313, RM-F14 and RM-F51 roads, located in the municipality of Torre Pacheco.
The works will begin with the demolition of the current overpasses, thus allowing the future high-speed line to pass alongside the conventional gauge line. Prior to this, work will begin this Monday to set up alternative routes for road traffic in order to facilitate mobility in the area while the works are being carried out. Specifically, for an approximately 2-kilometre-long stretch of the RM-19 between kilometres 15 and 17, there will be only one lane of traffic in each direction.
Adif AV has not indicated how long they expected the work to take but it is known that this stretch of road will be reduced to one lane of traffic until June 15, when both lanes will be made available again. Then, from September 15, after the end of the tourist high season, the traffic restrictions will be back in place in order to finish off the work.
All the actions have been planned in coordination with the General Directorate of Roads of the Region of Murcia and the municipal services involved in the Torre Pacheco Town Council.
In the section under construction, which runs for 17.7 kilometres through the municipalities of Murcia and Torre Pacheco, a new high-speed double-track standard gauge platform will be installed parallel to the conventional Chinchilla-Cartagena line.
Along the route, seven viaducts will be built, with a total length of 347 metres, along with 12 overpasses, one underpass and 44 transversal drainage works. In addition, the Balsicas-Mar Menor and Torre Pacheco train stations will be remodelled.
The work is funded through the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan of the European Union Next Generation funds.
