Travellers across Europe can breathe a sigh of relief as the strike announced by airport workers, which threatened to scupper the Christmas plans of countless passengers, has officially been called off after a meeting on Tuesday December 13.

 

Last week, the Workers’ Commissions (CCOO) which represent Aena airport staff throughout Spain, announced that its workers would be engaging in industrial action on key dates over Christmas and well into the new year. Airport and control centre employees argued that, although travel this year has almost returned to pre-pandemic levels, their productivity payment has not been reinstated and they remain out of pocket.

 

During the summer, Spain was plagued by strikes organised by the representatives of cabin crew and pilots from several different airlines. The work stoppages led to a huge number of delays and cancelled flights, and disruption that reverberated across Europe.

 

After reaching a solid agreement with the Ministry of Transport, the unions have confirmed that the payment will be received by the workers, together with performance management, in the first quarter of next year: 80% on the January payroll and the remaining 20% ​​on the March payroll.

 

Contrary to the truck driver strike initiated in Spain, which organisers claimed was thwarted by negative public reaction, CCOO believes the Spanish media was “key” in exerting “pressure” on airport bosses and securing better pay conditions for its employees.
