Spain weekend weather forecast Sept 5-8: South dries out by the north stays rainy
The weather for this weekend in Spain is forecast to be dry and sunny in the south and the Canaries but typically wet in the north and the Baleares
This weekend’s weather forecast for Spain promises a mix of conditions across the country, as a DANA storm brings instability, particularly in the north. While the south enjoys a gradual return to sunshine, the northern regions will experience persistent rain and storms throughout the weekend. Here’s a day-by-day breakdown of the forecast.
Thursday September 5
On Thursday, the approach of a DANA to the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula will bring instability to the northern and eastern thirds of Spain. Heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected, particularly along the coasts of Catalonia and the Balearic Islands in the early morning. These storms will gradually move eastwards across Catalonia, while the southeast experiences scattered storms.
In the northern third, rain will spread from west to east, with particularly heavy downpours in the Cantabrian Sea region by the end of the day. Aragón may also see some rainfall spreading from the north. The rest of the country will have partly cloudy skies, though faint haze is possible in Melilla and Almería. Morning fog and mist are likely in the northern and eastern regions.
Temperatures will vary, with a rise in central-eastern and western Catalonia, but a drop in the northwest and southeast. There may be the first frosts of the season in the Pyrenean summits. The Canary Islands will experience moderate trade winds and stable temperatures.
Friday September 6
Friday’s weather will be dominated by the presence of the DANA, which may evolve into a cold low. Northern and northeastern Spain will remain unstable with heavy cloud cover and rainfall. Early morning storms are likely to hit Navarra, northern Aragón, and the Pyrenees, particularly in Huesca, where more than 100 litres of rainfall could accumulate. Catalonia’s coastlines will also be affected by storms later in the day, with heavy rain expected in the evening.
Meanwhile, the northwest third of the peninsula will experience scattered rainfall and thunderstorms, with a high likelihood of locally heavy rain in parts of Galicia and Asturias. Cloudy skies will persist in the Canary Islands, although rain is unlikely there.
Morning fog is forecast for northern and eastern areas, as well as the Strait of Gibraltar, and the Balearic Islands could see a brief episode of dust from the Sahara. Maximum temperatures will rise in the Balearic Islands and along the Mediterranean and Cantabrian coasts but fall in other areas. Winds will continue to be moderate across the country, with strong gusts expected in the Pyrenees.
Saturday September 7
On Saturday, low pressure remains to the northwest of Spain, bringing continued rain and thunderstorms to the northern third of the country. Galicia and the western Cantabrian coast will see the heaviest rainfall. Thunderstorms may also develop in the Pyrenees and northern Aragón, while Catalonia’s coastline could still face stormy conditions. As the day progresses, the rain will begin to ease, and skies will gradually clear.
The southeastern parts of the peninsula, as well as the Balearic Islands, will see increased cloud cover, though showers are expected to be brief and light. There’s also a small chance of mud rain due to a calima (dust from the Sahara). Temperatures will rise across much of the country, particularly in the east, but remain steady in the Guadalquivir and northeast.
Trade winds will ease in the Canary Islands, and south-easterly winds will dominate the Mediterranean coast. The northern plateau and mountain areas may experience strong gusts of wind.
Sunday September 8
Sunday’s forecast indicates that the low-pressure system over the north will begin to move away, but cloudy skies and rainfall will persist in the northern third. Galicia, the Cantabrian coast, the Pyrenees and northern Catalonia can expect more rain, with occasional thunderstorms likely. Rainfall will gradually ease in these areas by the end of the day.
The southeastern regions and the Balearic Islands will see medium and high cloud cover, with a slight chance of light showers. These showers could contain mud, again due to the presence of Saharan dust. The Canary Islands will enjoy clear skies, except for a few clouds in the north.
Temperatures will rise in the western half of the peninsula and along the Levante coast but are expected to drop elsewhere. Winds will continue from the south and west along the Mediterranean, with strong intervals possible in the Alborán and Cantabrian seas.
