ARCHIVED - Spain rules out new Covid restrictions despite rising infections
The Ministry of Health in Spain has no plans to reintroduce mandatory quarantine for coronavirus patients
As the number of coronavirus infections continues to creep up in Spain and hospitalisations have once again begun to increase, many experts have called on the government to implement control measures to prevent the onslaught of a seventh wave. However, despite the worrying data, the Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, this week reiterated that reintroducing restrictions such as Covid quarantine “is not on the table.”
According to the latest Health report published on Tuesday May 10, the cumulative incidence rate among those over 60 years of age at 14 days is 843 cases per 100,000 people, 30 points more than last Friday.
However, the 7-day figure is less than half that, indicating that the prevalence of Covid is actually decreasing, not increasing.
With this in mind, the Minister has called once again for “prudence” and has asked anyone who tests positive for Covid to wear a mask, even outdoors, for 10 days and to avoid large social gatherings and interactions with older or vulnerable people; they do not, however, have to self-isolate any longer if they have mild or no symptoms.
Ms Darias added that the uptick in infections is hardly surprising given the “different festivities such as Holy Week” that have been taking place across Spain in recent weeks, and she believes that in the next few days the data will show a “trend towards a certain stabilisation.”
Despite this, the Ministry announced on May 12 that certain anti-Covid measures, such as mandatory masks on flights, would remain in place, even though the European Safety Agency has withdrawn its recommendation that masks be work on planes and in airports.
Currently, 5.89% of hospital beds are occupied by Covid patients, which moves the country out of the low risk category Covid experts recommended for maintaining the current measure, but intensive care levels are still quite low, at just 3.96%.
