ARCHIVED - Spain experiences lowest daily death toll in months: Covid update September 30
Almost 80% of the population of Spain has now received at least one coronavirus vaccine
The last week of September has once again seen the majority of Covid indicators reduce drastically, and as a result, many communities including Andalucía, Valencia and Murcia have further eased their coronavirus safety restrictions. The bulk of the population of Spain has by now received at least one jab, with this country among the top in Europe in the vaccination campaign.
Cumulative incidence rate
The 14-day incidence rate is one of the most reliable indicators of how the pandemic is evolving, and although the decline has slowed somewhat in recent days as the country edges toward a state of ‘new normal’, the figure had still dipped to 59.02 cases per 100,000 inhabitants on Thursday September 30 – this is down from 65.42 on Monday.
Those under the age of 11, who are currently not being vaccinated against coronavirus, remain the population with the highest 14-day figure, at 105.08, while the rate of infections in those aged between 12 and 19, until recently the group most affected by the fifth wave of the pandemic, has dropped significantly to 48.01 cases.
The situation varies greatly across autonomous communities, with Asturias holding firm to the top spot with just 17.77 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. It is closely followed by Galicia (27.79), Castilla y Leon (39.46), Navarra (45.67) and the Community of Valencia (46.25).
Overall, the incidence rate is decreasing steadily in all communities, will the north African enclave of Melilla the only region with a figure above 100.
Infections
The latest data from the Ministry of Health shows that 2,400 new infections were reported on Thursday, 1,124 of which were recorded in the last 24 hours. This is down from the 1,307 cases on the same day last week and brings the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 4,959,091.
Hospitalisations
On Thursday, there were 2,516 patients hospitalised with coronavirus, 100 fewer than on Wednesday. Crucially, the pressure on the ICUs is continuing to ease with 7.76% of intensive care beds occupied by Covid patients. To date, 4,959,091 people have been infected in Spain.
Fatalities
Eighteen fatalities have been reported in the past 24 hours and while even one death is of course too many, this is the lowest daily death toll recorded in Spain in several months, and is a huge decrease on the 100 deaths recorded on this day last week. A total of 86,415 people have died in Spain since the beginning of the pandemic.
Vaccination data
A total of 36,613,575 people, or 77.2% of the population, have now been fully immunised against coronavirus in Spain. In addition, 79.4% or 37,680,085 people have received at least one dose of the vaccine. These figures put Spain as one of the leading countries in Europe for administering both first and second doses, with 357,470 more people double jabbed in the last seven days.
To date, 70,083,821 doses of the Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Janssen vaccines received in Spain have been administered, representing 92.8% of the supply.
Fully vaccinated by age group
80+: 100% / 2.899.661 people
70 to 79: 98.8% / 3.911.892 people
60 to 69: 97.2% / 5.186.410 people
50 to 59: 93.5% / 6.576.688 people
40 to 49: 86.1% / 6.794.850 people
30 to 39: 74.1% / 4.618.673 people
20 to 29: 73.8% / 3.647.877 people
12 to 19: 76.6% / 2.977.524 people
Vaccinations by autonomous communities
It is perhaps unsurprising that Asturias has fully vaccinated the highest percentage of its population, at 84.2% given that this community also has the lowest 14-day cumulative incidence rate. It is followed by Galicia (83.4%), Extremadura (82.1%) and Castilla y Leon (81.1%). This order hasn’t changed in the last seven days.
In other areas, the Valencian Community has fully inoculated 78.4% of its population, the Region of Murcia has vaccinated 75.3% and Andalucía has doubled jabbed 77.8%.
