Some 15 million people aged between 40 and 59 in Spain could soon receive a third jab

The Interterritorial Health Council in Spain has presented a recommendation this week that the booster dose of the coronavirus vaccine be extended to those aged between 40 and 59 years old in light of the surging number of Covid cases in this country.

The experts have acknowledged that the efficacy of the vaccine significantly drops in people aged 18 to 60 over time and has asked the government to follow the European Commissions’s recommendation to roll out the third dose to younger populations.

Europe has specified that “after priority vaccination of people aged 60 and over” and those who have received the AstraZeneca jab is completed, it would be prudent “to start the administration of booster doses to people aged 40-59 years”, which represents around 15 million people in Spain.

According to the experts, a multitude of studies have shown that people vaccinated with two doses of AstraZeneca are more vulnerable to the virus and the effectiveness of the jab diminishes faster than the others.

The Vaccine Committee has also issued a series of recommendations to encourage the 4 million over-12s who have not yet been vaccinated to do so, and the document has stressed the need to rapidly apply the booster to the most vulnerable older population.

Among those over 70 years of age, the percentage of the population that has received the third dose is 77.81%, although in the group aged 60 to 69 that figure drops to 35.7%.
