Spain brings new charges against Shakira for tax fraud
The Colombian pop star is already due to stand trial in Barcelona this November

Just weeks before singer Shakira is due to be tried in Barcelona on November 20 for fraud against the Spanish Treasury, the Prosecutor’s Officer has levelled similar accusations against her to the tune of 6.2 million euros. This time, the Colombian pop star allegedly used a corporate network of tax havens to avoid paying a fortune in personal income and wealth tax in 2018.
A court in Esplugues de Llobregat has already opened an investigation against the Colombian singer for these new crimes, although she has not yet been summoned to testify.
The official charge sheet states that Shakira “moved by the desire not to pay taxes on all of her income and to stop paying into the State Treasury what was due to her, consciously and voluntarily presented untruthful personal income tax and IP declarations for the year 2018, omitting to declare income and deducting expenses that were not applicable, thus managing to reduce the amount to be paid into the State Administration of the Tax Agency (AEAT) by the IRPF and in the Tax Agency of Catalonia (ATC).”
In November, the Hips Don’t Lie diva will stand trial for allegedly defrauding 14.5 million euros between the years 2012 and 2014. The Prosecutor’s Office is asking for 8 years in prison and a fine of almost 24 million euros.
According to Shakira’s lawyers, no notification of the new charges relating to the 2018 tax fraud has reached her Miami home, and instead her extensive legal team is “focused on preparing the trial for the 2012-2014 financial year that will begin next November 20.”
Shakira, whose full name is Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, has had close ties with Spain since she started dating former footballer Gerard Piqué, but the pair ended their 11-year relationship in 2022.
