A man and a woman have been arrested in the Alicante town of Crevillente in connection with a luxury vehicle scam in which high-end cars were allegedly shipped from Romania before the mileage was tampered with to hike up resale prices.

During a search at the dealership, the National Police and Crevillente Local Police seized 14 cars of "different prestigious makes" with altered mileages of up to 100,000 kilometres.

The arrests were the culmination of a lengthy investigation after the local police suspected imported vehicles were being manipulated at a garage opposite the second-hand dealership that belonged to the same company before being offered for sale on the forecourt.

In this way, "such modifications allowed the fraudsters to obtain a higher profit on sales, as they sold the cars as second-hand vehicles with low mileage," according to police sources.

Following several searches, the company's activities were suspended and all the vehicles located were taken into judicial custody.

The two arrested, a man and a woman, aged 34 and 45, will face fraud and falsification charges at Elche Examining Magistrate's Court.
