Military officials are officiating a swearing of allegiance to the national flag of Spain in Águilas on September 30, and various additional activities are being held to make this an event which everyone can enjoy – including non-Spanish nationals who are not eligible to take part in the ceremony itself!
Some 200 people will be taking part in the salute of the flag at 12.00 outside the seafront Auditorio Infanta Doña Elena, with the schedule including the following:
Thursday September 28
16.00 to 19.00: Open days on board two Spanish Navy patrol ships, the Formentor and the Toralla, which will be moored in the Puerto Deportivo Juan Montiel.
20.00: The marching band of the Tercio de Levante division perform a concert in the seafront auditorium in Águilas, admission free of charge.
These two vessels were delivered to the Navy in 1987 and 1988 and are used in the protection of the Economic Exclusion Zone, while a further 5 ships were commissioned by the Spanish customs service. The hull is made from wood covered in glass-reinforced plastic and the Toralla and the Formentor are the only two of their kind currently in service with the Navy.
