September 27 Free tourist train, tastings and tours for Cartagena Tourism Day

World Tourism Day brings free activities designed to explore Cartagena from a different perspective

Cartagena will mark World Tourism Day this Sunday September 27, with three free experiences designed to bring the city’s heritage, history and local gastronomy closer to residents and visitors.

The programme, organised by the Tourism Department, includes a selection of participatory activities offering different ways to rediscover Cartagena’s historic centre.

Councillor for Tourism Beatriz Sánchez del Álamo highlighted the experiential nature of the programme, with the aim of promoting what she described as "open, close and participatory tourism". She also reminded residents and visitors that "Cartagena is not just a city to visit, it is a city to live in".

The programme will begin with an open tasting of café asiático (Asian coffee), one of Cartagena’s most recognisable gastronomic traditions. The tasting will take place from 11am to 12pm in the Town Hall Square, with Café Lab and José Díaz collaborating on the event to share the history and tradition surrounding the popular drink.

Visitors can also take one of three free guided journeys aboard the Tourist Train, with departures at 10am, 11am and 5pm from the Mare Nostrum restaurant in the port. The 35-minute tours will explore Cartagena’s old town, with informative stops at landmarks including Calle Real, Plaza de España and la Iglesia de la Caridad church.

The third experience will be the theatrical tour 'Polybius. The Memory of Qart Hadast', a 90-minute walking route led by actor Pepe Ortas, who takes on the role of Greek historian Polybius alongside his scribe.

Departures will take place at 10am and 12pm, with the route linking Molinete hill and the Town Hall Square while exploring Cartagena’s Roman past in an accessible and entertaining way.

The coffee tasting is free and open to everyone without prior registration. Places on both the Tourist Train and the theatrical tour, however, must be booked in advance.

The free booking form opened at 9am this Thursday September 24 on the official Cartagena Tourism website.
