Second patient comes forward in Murcia surgeon rape case as investigation widens
Policía Nacional confirm a new complaint while the accused remains in prison and detectives examine whether there may be further victims
A second woman has now filed a complaint against the plastic surgeon who is currently in pretrial detention, accused of raping a sedated patient during surgery at a private clinic in Murcia. The Policía Nacional have confirmed the new allegation, although it is not yet clear whether the alleged assault took place at the same medical centre. The surgeon was arrested earlier this month following an incident at IMED Virgen de la Fuensanta private hospital in Murcia, where he was carrying out breast surgery on a patient from his private practice. The alleged assault was discovered after two nurses noticed inappropriate behaviour in the operating theatre, recorded it on a mobile phone and alerted hospital management, who then contacted police.
According to the hospital, the surgery took place on Thursday December 4. The doctor does not belong to the IMED Hospitals medical team and had rented an operating room to perform the procedure. He was later arrested in Alicante and brought before a court in Molina de Segura, which ordered his immediate imprisonment.
Judicial sources say one of the key reasons for placing the suspect in custody was the fear that he could reoffend. The investigating judge cited both a “risk of repeat offences” and the possibility that the surgeon, who is originally from Mexico, might attempt to flee the country.
So far, police investigators from the Family and Women’s Assistance Unit have formally received one additional complaint from a woman who reported discomfort in her genital area after undergoing surgery. She has since been examined by a forensic doctor. Officers have also taken statements from two other women who had cosmetic procedures carried out by the same surgeon in the days before the reported assault.
One of the nurses who raised the alarm has told police she now believes there may be other victims. In her statement, she said the allegations were “a great disappointment” and admitted she feels “guilty”, although she stressed that she had never previously witnessed any misconduct by the doctor.
Meanwhile, in a separate but related development, another case of alleged sexual assault by a healthcare professional has emerged in Murcia, involving a psychologist working for the regional health service. A woman reported inappropriate touching during therapy sessions, prompting his arrest. He has since been released with charges and a restraining order.
Police say both investigations remain ongoing.
