ARCHIVED - Saturday 21st March Free Iberian route in Jumilla; Coimbra del Barranco Ancho and Archaeological Museum
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
The site was home to around 500 Iberians
It is possible to walk to the archaeological site of the Iberian settlement at Coimbra del Barranco Ancho in the mountains of Sierra de Santa Ana, just outside Jumilla on any day of the year, but Saturdays 14th and 21st March are amongst the rare occasions when free guided tours are held, on this occasion by the local tourist office.
Further information and reservations from the tourist office of Jumilla, for a tour which starts in the car park of the indoor swimming pool on Avenida de la Libertad at 11.00. All those joining the group should bring their own car (the site is about 5km from the town centre), and footwear appropriate for the rough terrain they will be crossing on the way to the prehistoric settlement which was home to 500 or so Iberian residents.
Individual homes at Coimbra were generally rectangular and made out of adobe walls on a stone base, with roofs made from straw, mud and branches, and an ingenious rudimentary drainage system was used to ensure that rain was carried out of the buildings through small channels on the floor.
At the eastern end of the settlement is the main necropolis, or burial ground, where the 100 or so graves have shed a great deal of light on funeral practices in Iberian society, and the most important finding is the memorial stone known as the “Cipo funerario de los Jinetes” (grave number 70): this is decorated on three sides by images of figures on horseback images and on the fourth by a farewell scene.
After visiting the site, participants will drive back to the town centre and visit the Archaeological Museum to view artifacts recovered in the excavations, amongst them the memorial stone found in grave number 70.
Commentary throughout the tour is in Spanish.
