Sand on La Manga beach replaced with soil by accident
Council workers made a mistake this Monday when they dumped dug earth on the beach instead of fresh sand

The sand replacement work being carried out by the Cartagena City Council on a beach in La Manga has sparked criticism after the wrong kind of earth was put down.
The incident happened this week on the beach that is just past the Galúa hotel in La Manga del Mar Menor, in the direction of the Las Gaviotas urbanisation, very close to the Plaza Bohemia square.
Early on Monday morning, July 3, no fewer than six lorries turned up on the beach and unloaded the earth, with two tractors spreading it across an area of more than 200m2, around half the beach.
The problem was, according to local residents who spoke to regional Spanish media, that what they were putting down looked like “tilled earth” that would be muddy instead of sandy.
Some of the residents of nearby buildings tried to stop the workers from continuing, without success. One of the municipal technicians present explained to them that “the soil was brown because it was wet” and that “it came from an excavation site in Cabo de Palos”.
Municipal sources in Cartagena, which overseas the La Manga beaches, claimed it was “beach sand” but it was just a different colour to the greyish one that was already there, which was also the result of a previous replacement.
In addition, they said, “it has been sieved, so there are no traces of stones”, and it has the approval of the ‘Costas’ coastal authority.
Many beaches in the Region of Murcia and Spain regularly have their sand topped up and smoothed over, especially after heavy rains such as those that occurred in May.
Some beaches in La Manga have even been the sites of rare turtles nesting and laying their eggs recently.
Normally, though, natural sand matching the type already at the beach is used, and it seems that an error had been made with the beach in La Manga.
At the stroke of midday yesterday, three new technicians returned to the beach and admitted that “they had made a mistake” and that “they would bring shovels to remove it and try to bury it under the existing sand”.
