San Miguel bridge will open to traffic in September
Reconnecting Orihuela city with the coast and Torrevieja has cost 2.6 million euros
Traffic is flowing once again on the Rambla de Lo Quiles of the CV-95 in San Miguel de Salinas, thanks to a newly installed structure that bypasses the town centre and eliminates the need for a lengthy detour.
This route is serving as a temporary alternative while bridge repair work is underway, providing a much-needed solution to the road closure that has been in effect since April.
The busy road, connecting Orihuela and inland towns to Torrevieja and the Orihuela Costa, as well as providing access to the AP-7 and the N-332, is now safer and more efficient for vehicles.
With an investment of 2.6 million euros, the works on the new bridge are expected to be completed by the end of September.
The bridge reconstruction was undertaken during the peak summer months when traffic was at its heaviest, but the authorities had no choice but to cause this disruption because of the state of the road.
The bridge has been steadily deteriorating since the cold snap of 2019. Before the summer, the entire structure looked close to collapse, the road surface was subsiding and the pillars were all slanting. As a result, the Generalitat Valenciana announced emergency plans to carry out a major overhaul back in March.
Moreover, the San Miguel Arcángel Residents' Association had alerted the regional administration almost a year ago about the worsening situation, emphasising the urgent need for action due to the safety risks.
The new bridge is essential for the region, as it’s the only main road connecting the thriving Orihuela Costa and the capital city. Hundreds of workers rely on the CV-95 daily, including those in the construction and distribution industries, healthcare professionals and educators. Additionally, it serves as the primary route for public transportation between the southern coast and inland Orihuela.
