S-81 Isaac Peral submarine will be ready to launch on November 30
The Cartagena-built vessel will be handed over to the Spanish Navy in an official ceremony

It’s been 20 years in the works, but the Isaac Peral S-81 submarine is about to get its sea legs as the state-of-the-art war ship is scheduled to be handed over to the Spanish Navy in Cartagena on November 30.
The Peral is the first entirely Spanish designed and built vessel of its kind, one of four ordered by the Ministry of Defence in 2003, and it passed its very last safety tests in Murcian waters on Friday November 17.
Up to 7,000 people worked on the submarine at one time, according to Ignacio Núñez, production director of the Navantia shipyard, who admitted that the way has been paved with numerous problems, delays and setbacks. But now all that remains is a final lick of paint before the ship is delivered to the Navy in a ceremony officiated by Princess Leonor.
“It is gratifying to be able to say: Here is the submarine, it is perfect,” Mr Núñez added.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the S-80 programme started in 2003 with the objective of “providing the Navy with state-of-the-art submarines and betting on the technological development of the national industry with a clear international projection.”
The construction of four submarines was thus authorised: the S-81 Isaac Peral, the S-82 Narciso Monturiol, the S-83 Cosme García and the S-84 Mateo García de los Reyes.

Spain has now made a name for itself globally as a “technical authority” in the design and construction of submarines, Mr Núñez proudly explained, adding that the navies of India, Canada, Turkey, Egypt and Poland have all expressed an interest in the vessel.
