ARCHIVED - Ryanair calls on Spanish and UK governments to protect passengers from cancelled flights
French Air Traffic Controller strikes have caused hundreds of delays and cancellations in Spain and the rest of Europe
The summer might be over, but the chronic disruptions which have marred countless holiday plans for the past few months are dragging on, with the latest strike action called by Air Traffic Controllers in France affecting flights all over Europe. Budget carrier Ryanair has this week waded into the fray, accusing the French of using the minimum service regulations to secure their own air traffic while pushing the problems back on the likes of Spain, Italy, the UK and Ireland.
The problems are being caused by so-called ‘overflights’, routes which cross through French airspace. Despite assurance from industry insiders in France, carriers in Spain and the rest of Europe have been forced to axe dozens of flights and delay many more, greatly impacting the holiday plans of countless travellers.
According to Ryanair, the EU Commission has failed to protect Europe’s single market for air travel, allowing France to close its airspace without consequences, and has called on the Spanish and other governments to take their own action to prevent this dire impact on passenger travel plans.
Ryanair CEO, Michael O’Leary said: “We’re fed up with these repeated flight disruptions and cancellations caused by tiny French ATC unions, and the French Government policy of using minimum services to protect French flights for French citizens while disrupting thousands of flights overflying France for thousands of EU citizens who are not travelling to/from France.
"The EU Commission under Ursula von der Leyen continues to stand idly by while Europe’s single market for air travel is wrecked again and again by these tiny French ATC unions, and if the EU Commission won’t act to protect its citizens, then national Govt must intervene.”
