Road closures and free transport in Murcia for Christmas tree light up
Several streets in Murcia city will apply traffic restrictions on Friday afternoon, December 6
The festive season is finally here, and Murcia is pulling out all the stops to make this Christmas one to remember. This Friday December 6, the city will be transformed into a winter wonderland as the big Christmas tree is lit up in Plaza Circular.
To ensure that everyone can enjoy the festivities without worrying about traffic and parking, Murcia City Council has announced that public transport will be free for the whole day.
From 6pm onwards, buses and trams will be operating on a special schedule to accommodate the large crowds expected in the area. Bus routes will be modified, with some lines ending at nearby points to avoid congestion in Plaza Circular.
Specifically, the lines that arrive from Avenida Juan de Borbón and the Atalayas shopping centre will turn around at Plaza Juan XXIII, while those from Ronda Norte and Isaac Albéniz will do so at Plaza Díez de Revenga.
The Tram will also be operating on a special schedule, with those coming from the University ending at the Juan Carlos I stop and trams from the shopping centres stopping at Plaza Circular before beginning their return journey.
In parallel, reversible lanes will be established in the Plaza Circular and on the axes of Avenida Primo de Rivera and Ronda de Levante to maintain the fluidity of traffic in the surroundings of the Plaza Circular.
If the square's capacity is reached, traffic will be completely closed in the area, according to the city council, whose aim is to "promote the use of public transport as an alternative to private transport to enjoy this Christmas day which will be attended by thousands of Murcianos."
