<span style='color:#780948'>ARCHIVED</span> - Researchers from Cartagena University patent smart traffic system to reduce waiting times at red lights

The ‘Lemur Smart Traffic System’ developed by researchers at the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) promises to solve a myriad a road traffic issues in one fell swoop: the state-of-the-art solution is capable of cutting waiting times at intersections by half, speeding up travel times by 20% and reducing the fuel consumption of cars and other vehicles by 10%.

As if that wasn’t enough, the Lemur system is also a friend to the environment, slashing CO2 emissions and suspended particles by 30% and 20%, respectively.

“Thanks to the tests carried out in semi-controlled environments, we managed to get our solution to work in real time on very small devices installed at traffic lights, making it possible to use them in real scenarios,” explained Lola Cano, professor at the School of Telecommunications of the UPCT.

The project was initially financed by the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) but professor Cano is also head of the company Decision Habitat, which is looking at working with other businesses to launch the Lemur Smart Traffic System in the commercial sphere.

With this impressive achievement under her belt, Ms Cano has set her sights on autonomous driving for the Region of Murcia and beyond, turning travellng into “a pleasant experience” where motorists can “invest their time in learning, listening to podcasts or reading, in a playful activity or simply observing the city”.

The Lemur Smart Traffic System has already been pilot tested and approved by the Seneca Foundation and the device has been successfully patented by the researchers.
