ARCHIVED - Red prawn prices in Aguilas get along swimmingly
The crunchy crustaceans from the Murcia municipality have reached their highest price all summer
While crop farmers in other municipalities in the Region of Murcia are fearing the worst for this year’s harvest thanks to unrelenting sunshine and virtually no rain, fishermen in Águilas are rejoicing over the high price their catches of red prawns are fetching at the local markets.
This past Tuesday, August 16, the crunchy crustaceans reached their top value so far this summer, with the largest calling for 110 euros a kilo.

Not to be sniffed at either, medium prawns were going for 80 euros while the smaller specimens were still commanding as much as 36 euros per kilo.
Some 250 kilos are being caught on a daily basis at the moment between the eight trawlers operating out of Águilas.
The Águilas red prawn is one of the most in demand species in the locality’s fish market, due to its high quality, flavour and texture; it’s not surprising then that the product routinely reaches sky-high prices, particularly around Christmas and New Year, when a kilo can go for as much as 160 euros.
So popular is this shellfish in Murcia that Águilas celebrates its Red Prawn festival annually, a gastronomic extravaganza where several restaurants and local eateries offer their take on the delicacy for customers to sample.
