Processionary caterpillar spraying scheduled for Camposol this January

The pests can represent a danger to pets and humans

Mazarrón council has announced that Lokimica, its contracted pest control company, will carry out treatment against processionary caterpillar nests in the Camposol urbanisation this January.

The pine processionary caterpillar (Thaumetopoea pityocampa) is a species commonly found in Mediterranean pine forests. While it is a natural part of the ecosystem, contributing to organic matter recycling and serving as a food source for birds, it can also cause significant damage to pine trees.

Additionally, its stinging hairs pose a potential health risk to humans and animals, capable of triggering allergic reactions.

Preventative measures, such as keeping pine trees healthy through proper pruning and watering, are recommended to minimise infestation. Professional treatments, such as those being conducted by Lokimica on behalf of the council, can effectively halt the animals’ spawning activity.

However, even after successful treatment, the caterpillars’ distinctive tent-like nests may remain visible. These structures, while inactive, can present an aesthetic issue but are not a threat to the tree.

Mazarrón council has highlighted that removing the nests is often discouraged, as this can weaken the tree and increase its susceptibility to future infestations.

Not only that, but nests located on high branches may be in areas critical to the tree’s growth, and removal could cause additional harm.

Residents are advised to exercise caution and ensure pets avoid contact with the caterpillars during the treatment period.
