ARCHIVED - Political parties suggest making Isla Plana and La Azohia part of Mazarron
Opposition parties hoping to win in the May local elections have proposed changing the jurisdiction of these two localities

The Independent Unity Party of Mazarrón has expressed its intention to initiate, during the next legislature, the process for La Azohía and Isla Plana to join Mazarrón.
La Azohía and Isla Plana are both currently classified as part of Cartagena, and fall under the jurisdiction of Cartagena Council, despite being physically closer to Mazarrón.
In a statement explaining their wish, the aspiring political party said, “It is unquestionable that geographically even Cabo Tiñoso is part of the Bay of Mazarrón. The area has a lot of potential and is not being developed enough. It has many attractions, such as the almadraba, which is unique. It needs a boost to improve.”
As for the benefits it would bring to the more than 1,600 registered inhabitants, they say it would mean their nearest municipal services like health centres and public transport links would be in Puerto de Mazarrón, closer to where they are.
In addition, they claim that the expansion of the municipality would contribute to economic and administrative savings of public resources.
The mayor of Cartagena, Noelia Arroyo, has responded to these calls by saying, “Isla Plana and La Azohía are Cartagena, will continue in Cartagena and will continue to improve services within Cartagena.”
Over the next two months, opposition parties and smaller political movements are likely to make more grand statements such as these to garner attention and support ahead of the local elections in May, in which some registered expat residents are eligible to vote.
For instance, the far-left Podemos party, who are hoping to oust the incumbent centre-right PP in Cartagena City Council, have suggested charging tourists who arrive on cruise ships to the city a flat rate of 1.50 euros per person to raise more money for the municipal coffers, to fund projects such as the improvement of services in places like Isla Plana and La Azohía.
