ARCHIVED - Pilar de la Horadada takes step closer to creating local branch of national cancer charity
A former AECC branch in the Vega Baja town, Alicante closed 10 years ago when the board of directors dissolved

A decade after Pilar de la Horadada's branch of the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) closed, the town is a step closer to resurrecting the local group.
Mayor José María Pérez Sánchez and Councillor for Health, Nieves Moreno, met earlier this week to discuss taking the first steps to establishing the Local Board of the AECC, a meeting that was attended by around 50 local residents.
Headway was made during the gathering, and a president was even appointed; local woman, Emilia Sánchez Moya.
A local AECC group once existed in Pilar de la Horadada, but disappeared almost 10 years ago when the board of directors was dissolved. Several residents have tried on various occasions to re-establish the group, but unsuccessfully.
Until now. On this occasion, the mayor has become personally involved and has acted as an intermediary with the provincial AECC headquarters and everything is in place to legally set the group up.
"Pilar de la Horadada needs a local branch of the AECC, it's an asset for the town that will help many people who need it," said the mayor.
The next step is for the new president to select a board of directors.
Pilar's Councillor for Health is so confident rapid progress will be made that she assured the group could be up-and-running imminently.
"In the coming weeks, Pilar de la Horadada will have a local branch to collaborate, among other things, with research into this disease which is taking so many lives".
February 4 is World Cancer Day and the AECC has launched a province-wide campaign in Malaga where diagnoses have risen considerably over the last few years, with almost 12,000 cases forecast in 2030.
