Orihuela Costa potholes will finally be filled
Some of the worst roads to be repaired are in Torrezenia

The state of the roads in and around Orihuela Costa is a constant cause of annoyance for residents, and the recent heavy rain has only made matters worse, washing away the sand that was dumped in several potholes as a patch-up attempt.
Hopefully the situation is about to improve as Orihuela City Council has issued several tenders this week for road maintenance crews.
At the end of February, the contract for paving 20 coastal areas was awarded for €1 million and four projects are currently underway.
The project also includes improving safety on the Villamartín and San Miguel de las Salinas roads, with €384,000 to be partially funded by a grant from the Alicante Provincial Council. The project is currently pending drafting and public exhibition, and once approved, the tendering process can begin.

The streets of Torrezenia, close to Lomas de Cabo Roig, are one of the areas worst affected by potholes at the moment. The resurfacing work has been required since 2018 but it was left out of the last few budgets because there wasn’t enough money to complete it. The €60,000 project has now been approved and put out to tender.
This much-needed work will include repairing the footpaths and road surfaces and filling in the potholes on Avenida de Orihuela, Calle Carlos Torres and Avenida de Torrevieja. It should only take 10 days to complete once the work starts.
Social media has been flooded with photos of the deplorable condition of Orihuela Costa’s roads, particularly Torrezenia, where most residents agree the budget is far from sufficient.

“It took more than six years to implement a winning proposal in the 2019 participatory budget and for the City Council to carry out a €60,000 asphalt project, which will clearly be insufficient to update the roads in this coastal neighbourhood,” stated the Unidos por la Costa association.
“The streets remain in a lamentable state as a result of the lack of management capacity of those who govern us,” they added.
Meanwhile, the road maintenance service, which expired in early February, is awaiting a new contract through the municipal company Gestión Medioambiental, responsible for garbage collection and street cleaning.
