Work to create a gourmet food venue in Cartagena’s Gisbert market will start at the end of this month, and take up to 9 months to complete

Opening of new gastromarket in Cartagena pushed back a year

The conversion of the Mercado Gisbert market in Cartagena into a gourmet gastromarket is still in the process of being awarded, despite an announcement last November the Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Tourism, Trade, Health and Consumer Affairs, Manuel Padín, that work would begin “imminently”.

After the proposal was initially launched over a year ago, Cartagena City Council is aiming for the end of February or beginning of March as an approximate date for work to begin. Sources from the Town Hall explained, “It is about three weeks of tendering and adjudication, and then the works will begin.”

This first phase of the conversion has a base budget of 411,400 euros and an estimated completion period of three months, so if everything goes according to plan it will be completed in early summer.

The work will focus on refurbishing the main façade of the Mercado Gisbert building, which currently has problems with damp and leaks, and large windows will be installed so that the interior of the building can be seen from the outside. A new type of paving will be laid in the street outside the building and the interior ceilings, partition walls and stairs will all be demolished and remade.

Once all that is completed, the second phase of the project will consist of creating an area with tables and chairs inside for customers to sit and eat products from the new food stalls. A total of 16 food stalls are planned, including a butcher’s, a greengrocer’s, a fishmonger’s, a bakery and a café, among others. This phase will cost around 700,000 euros and will take around 6 months to complete.

Councillor Padín stated back in November that the new market would be ready “at the end of this year”, but judging by the new timeframe for the work it seems that the date for the grand opening will now be pushed back to the end of 2023 instead.
