ARCHIVED - Oktoberfest returns to San Javier after two-year Covid hiatus: October 7-9
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
The Murcia town is hosting a weekend of live music, beers and German food

The annual Oktoberfest makes a welcome return to San Javier next weekend after a forced two-year absence due to the pandemic.
From October 7 to 9, San Javier fairgrounds (recinto ferial) at El Pino industrial estate will be transformed with Oktoberfest tents typically found at the world-renowned festival in Munich, recreating a Bavarian atmosphere with themed costumes, live music, a German 'biergarten' (beer garden), and gastronomy.
"The San Javier Oktoberfest is the only one that has the official recognition of Paulaner Brauerei München beer," explained Francisco José Zacarías, spokesman in the area for the famous wheat beer brewed in Munich.
Town mayor, José Miguel Luengo, will lead the official festival opening ritual by tapping the first keg at 8pm on Friday October 7 and from then, the fairground will be open 12 noon until 2am on Saturday and Sunday.

The festival is organised by the Peña El Cantazo, in collaboration with the Town Hall, and this year more than 30 people will be on hand to serve different varieties of Paulaner's wheat beer, Lager and Salvator, brought from Munich for the three-day event. There will also be gluten-free and non-alcoholic beers.
And in the gastronomic area, different varieties of German sausages, roast chicken and hamburgers, amongst other options, can be sampled.
As has been the case every year, proceeds from the festival, which is sponsored by more than 100 companies, will go to charity. This year, profits will be split between Aidemar, AFA Levante and Crece con Dabadá.
The Oktoberfest is traditionally one of the "greatest annual events" in San Javier, according to the mayor, and it's hoped this year will be no exception.
"The festival enjoys the official seal of Paulaner and positions San Javier at a national level, attracting a large audience from inside and outside the Region of Murcia," he said, highlighting the event's "support for local bands and its charitable nature".
