October 9 Alicante City celebrates Valencia Day with packed programme of events
The Alicante fiesta includes incredible fireworks displays, dance live performances, concerts and more
Every year, October 9 is celebrated in Spain’s Valencian Community as the ‘Día de la Comunidad Valenciana’ or Day of Valencia, and the day is taken as a day off work and school. Most shops and supermarkets will also be closed.
That’s no reason to be bored though, as the Department of Culture in Alicante City has scheduled a packed programme of events throughout the day, in addition to an exciting fireworks display from the port on the evening before (Tuesday October 8).
The festivities will actually kick off on Monday October 7 and Tuesday 8, with a magical reading by secondary school students of the romantic fable ‘Tirant lo Blanch’, a story of love and chivalry penned by a Valencian knight in the 15th century. The performances will be held in the Blue Room of the Town Hall and the Municipal Arts Centre between 10am and 1pm.
On Wednesday October 9, the big day, one of the highlights expected to draw a huge crowd is a special concert by the Municipal Symphony Band beginning at 12pm.
An hour before, dance enthusiasts will be delighted by a moving performance starting at 11am at the Plaza del Mar and moving towards the Concha de la Explanada auditorium. Several thrilling dance groups will take part, including Candil and Postiguet, the Nanos i Gegants d´Alacant and dolçainers i tabaleters from the Federació de Folclore d´Alacant.
And at midnight on October 8-9, a fireworks display will be launched from the port of Alicante, as a prelude to the day of the Valencian Community.
Valencia Day comes just three days before the Día de la Hispanidad or Spain Day on October 12, which is a public bank holiday everywhere in Spain each year.
