The canopy will protect pedestrians from the sun while preserving the historic building facades on Calle Carmen
Work has begun on the long-anticipated installation of the ‘Teselas’ shade system along Calle del Carmen in Cartagena. The project is designed to provide maximum sun protection without covering or hiding the historic facades of the buildings - something which caused uproar a couple of years ago.According to experts, the system could lower the ambient temperature on the street by as much as six degrees.Last Tuesday, workers started anchoring the system’s supports to unprotected building facades and specially installed posts. The process ensures no heritage-protected buildings are altered. The first phase will begin at the Plaza del Icue end of the street, with the goal of covering around one-third of the route this month. The company Pegiro is responsible for carrying out the installation.Although the shade system was originally planned to be in place by June, issues with the documentation submitted by the bidding company meant the tender had to be reissued. This led to a delay in starting the work. The current phase will act as a pilot, allowing the City Council to assess how the system functions and how well it integrates visually before extending it further along the street. The name ‘Teselas’ comes from the small pieces used in mosaics. The shade structure reflects that concept through a modular roof made from rhomboid textile panels that create a suspended mosaic effect. This design allows sunlight to be filtered without blocking views of the surrounding architecture. Before beginning the work, Pegiro carried out a detailed study of sunlight and shade patterns along Calle del Carmen to determine how many panels were needed and where they should be placed for the best coverage. The ‘Teselas’ system is designed to be modular and reversible so it can be adapted to the needs of different streets. In Calle del Carmen, which is almost 300 metres long and home to lots of shops and other businesses, the installation will serve as a test case.If successful, the City Council intends to expand the system to other streets within Cartagena’s Old Town, offering more shaded, cooler spaces for residents and visitors to enjoy.Image: Ayuntamiento de Cartagena

DomusVi is one of the longest-established and largest care home networks in Spain, having been offering top class facilities to residents for over 30 years and currently looking after more than 34,000 people either temporarily or on a permanent basis all over the country. Each of their residences is designed, equipped and staffed in such a way as to guarantee comfortable and tranquil stays for residents, with personalized attention leading them to enjoy an active and sociable environment in what they soon consider to be their home.
The care offered at DomusVi nursing homes is comprehensive. This sense of emotional wellbeing is backed up by the guarantee of physical wellbeing, with safety, security and medical care being given the utmost importance. Therapies and activities are scheduled both to promote autonomy and the maintenance of the person’s abilities and to improve their physical and emotional state. This is possible thanks to the committed and dedicated professional teams who work on it.That they can offer this personalized attention from the very first day is due to the thorough initial assessment of each new resident before their arrival, taking into account not only their physical needs but also their personal preferences, from hobbies to eating habits. Once residents see that they are treated in this way, they quickly adapt to the friendly family environment – this fact makes it possible for them to feel at home but with added comforts and luxuries such as a hairdresser, a swimming pool and a wider social circle!
The new DomusVi centre in the city of Murcia is located right opposite the “Palacio de Justicia” (the modern provincial court building) in one of the most attractive parts of the city, and with views looking out towards the mountains and the countryside of the “Huerta”. It’s location close to the inner and outer ring roads on the eastern side of the city make it easily accessible by car, and parking is generally easy close by, making it easy for visitors to pop in and visit their loved ones. And at all DomusVi centres there are staff who speak English!
