New skyscraper to be built on site of old Delfin hotel in Benidorm

Its days have been numbered for some time now but Benidorm will finally bid farewell to the iconic Gran Hotel Delfín as plans have been green-lighted to tear down the abandoned building and replace it with a towering 44-storey skyscraper.

After several months of back-and-forth talks, the council has now granted a construction licence to Goya Real Estate, whose promoters plan to replace the derelict hotel with a “more striking” 158 metre high structure. The approval, a Goya spokesperson said, “marks a key milestone” in the rejuvenation of Benidorm’s beach front.

Built in 1963, the Gran Hotel Delfín marked the beginning of the Costa Blanca’s tourism development boom and it still holds a coveted place right on the front line of the famous Poniente Beach.

In honour of its illustrious history, the new skyscraper will bear the same name as its humbler predecessor, but the tower promises to be more luxurious than any other on the coast.

Part of the building will be transformed into a hotel with exclusive facilities such as a sauna, spa, gym, yoga and pilates studios, sky gardens, restaurants and swimming pools. The rest of the space will be turned into homes for 100 residents who can take full advantage of all the services the hotel has to offer.

New owners will also have their own separate recreation areas “to guarantee their privacy and tranquility.”

One unusual feature of the new build is that the residential homes will automatically come with a tourist licence, so that owners can rent out their apartments to holidaymakers “without restrictions, generating extra profitability.”

To date, 88 of the residential apartments have already been reserved, according to the developer.

The skyscraper will be designed to not only dominate the Benidorm skyline, but to compliment it: once completed, the tower will look like two sails joined by a central mast, affording every apartment a stunning sea view.

Mediterranean dunes will surround the building, creating harmony with the natural landscape, and the new and improved Gran Delfín will be built according to Spain’s LEED Gold sustainability certificate, with eco-friendly materials and technologies.
