ARCHIVED - New playground and sports area earmarked for north of La Manga, San Javier
San Javier Town Council is investing 178,000 euros to "improve" the area with new facilities
Residents living in the north of La Manga del Mar Menor have been complaining about dilapidated or under-used public facilities that have become nothing more than eyesores in the area for years.
Locals were so fed-up that last year, 30 presidents of homeowners' associations in the northern part of La Manga that falls within San Javier joined forces to create the future Neighbourhood Association of La Manga Norte to put pressure on the Town Hall to tackle "the total abandonment of the area".
In response, San Javier Council has promised to step up and has revealed plans for a children's playground and calisthenics sports area with an investment of around 178,000 euros. A start date has not been given, but the work is expected to take three months.
The project will be part-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) to implement the Region's DUSI Strategy 'La Manga abierta (open) 365'.
The project aims to "transform the environment into a sustainable tourist centre".
One of the objectives of the strategy proposed within the line of action La Manga Abierta 365 called 'Development of recreational spaces' is to create new open areas by "transforming deteriorated or underused plots of La Manga".
The project will see the creation of two spaces, one of them underused (Sports Centre area) where a calisthenics zone will be built, and the other in a deteriorated area (Paquebote Park). According to the council, they'll be converted for recreation and leisure, with new paving, street furniture, green areas and landscaping.
