ARCHIVED - New cycle lane will link Espinardo Campus with Murcia city centre
The 3.6km bike lane in Murcia is expected to be completed by June 2023
Murcia City Council has unveiled plans for a new 3.6km cycle lane that will link the Espinardo Campus and the city centre.
The project, which will be put forward for European Next Generation funds, is being created in response to a "historical demand, both from students, university professors, and from the UMU en Bici association".
The new lane will be segregated and run along Avenida Juan Carlos I and calles Antonio Rocamora, Lorca Planes, Cayetano Gago Regidor and Severo Ochoa.
Exclusive for cyclists, the lane will provide a potential service to 20,000 people linked to the Espinardo Campus community and the thousands of residents in Espinardo, Churra and El Puntal.
"The new lane will be segregated as there are currently several sections of bike lane along this route, especially in the area of Juan Carlos I, that extends over the pavement and whose use is shared by scooters and pedestrians, which has generated many problems and complaints," explained the Councillor for Sustainable Mobility and Road Cleanliness, Carmen Fructuoso.
She also assured that, if the European funds are not obtained, the Town Hall will pay for the works within the 2022 Municipal Budgets.
The cost of the project will be between 300,000 and 400,000 euros and the council expects it to be built before June 2023.
Construction of the lane will mean the loss of some parking spaces, but the council plans "to take advantage of the works to create new spaces".
The cycle lane is included in the 'Murcia Pedalea' plan which aims to promote sustainable mobility and the use of bicycles with the construction of 100 new kilometres of cycle lanes.
