Tranvía de Murcia launched a new mobile payment application on Thursday October 13 that can be used on the Murcia Tram in the Region’s capital city. The pilot project is currently only available to university students but if successful, could be rolled out to the general population.

 

The system comprises a virtual wallet that users can top up anywhere using a credit card or Paypal. To buy a ticket, passengers simply scan a QR code displayed on the trams or at stops, which registers the journey. It’s completely secure and eliminates the need to carry cash to pay for public transport.

Students will be able to buy a package of 32 trips for 10.50 euros. For the time being, all other users will continue to buy tickets, top up and validate vouchers in the usual way.

 

Using BlockChain technology, the QR scanning system aims to create “environments with inviolable, safe, transparent and traceable records for users and businesses in any action or transaction.”

 

 

It also reduces Murcia’s carbon footprint, since no physical tickets or receipts will be printed and the cashless method promises to save time and reduce inconvenience.

 

Tranvía de Murcia will be the first public transport platform in Spain to use BlockChain to digitise its payment method, and the company believes that this is the future in terms of purchasing products and services.

 

The University of Murcia, SYSCOMED, ​​SMARTFI and Tranvía de Murcia have all participated in this project, with the collaboration of the Murcia City Council. The initiative is part of the Specialization and Innovation Strategy for the Smart Specialization of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia (RIS3Mur Strategy) co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) of the European Union.
