July was a busy month for road safety enforcement in Alicante province. According to figures from the Guardia Civil, 92 drivers were brought before the courts during the month for alleged traffic offences, with driving without a valid permit or licence accounting for the largest single group at 47 cases, followed closely by drink-driving at 37.

 

The remaining cases included four for reckless driving, two for driving under the influence of drugs, one for speeding and one for leaving the scene of an accident.

 

Separately, expired ITV certificates continue to generate a significant number of fines across the region, also with Murcia alone recording an average of 70 fines a day for that offence in the first half of 2026.

 

The breakdown of the licence cases is particularly striking. Of the 98 drivers investigated for lacking a permit across the wider Valencian Community in July, 54 had lost all their points on the driving licence, 10 had their permit suspended by court order, one had been permanently revoked and 33 had simply never obtained a licence at all.

 

Across the Valencian Community as a whole, 225 drivers were brought before the courts during July for road safety offences. Drink-driving was the most common charge at community level, with 116 cases recorded. Valencia province contributed 36 licence cases and 57 drink-driving investigations, while Castellón accounted for 15 and 22 respectively.

 

The figures sit alongside a broader picture of summer road risks in the province, including the common mistakes that can catch drivers out and lead to significant fines. The numbers are a reminder that summer, for all its appeal as a time to relax, brings heightened enforcement activity on Spanish roads. More vehicles, more tourists, more late nights and a greater Guardia Civil presence on key routes make July and August some of the most actively policed months of the year.

 

Driving without a valid licence, in particular, is treated seriously by the courts, and the consequences extend well beyond a standard fine.
