More than six weeks have passed since 75-year-old British resident Janet Fison disappeared from her home in Jacarilla, Alicante, and there is still no sign of what might have happened to her.

 

Janet, who had lived in the town since 2007, was last seen on the evening of Friday May 30. According to her husband, the day had been entirely normal. The couple had even gone out for a drink at a local bar. But after returning home, Janet said she wasn’t feeling well, began to prepare dinner, and then suddenly left the house with no warning.

 

She took no phone, no money, and no identity documents with her. There was no note, no message, and no explanation. The only possible clue came from a witness who reported seeing her walking near the River Segura at around 8.40pm that evening, wearing a brown floral dress and heading in the direction of Benejúzar.

 

A major search operation was launched in the days that followed, involving police, volunteers, helicopters, drones, sniffer dogs and thermal cameras. But despite these efforts, not a single lead has been found. The Civil Guard has confirmed the investigation is still open, although they admit that a voluntary disappearance cannot be ruled out.

 

Janet’s sudden vanishing has shaken the small town of Jacarilla, home to just over 2,000 residents. Unlike many foreign residents who only visit in the summer, Janet and her husband were part of the community all year round. “They were registered as residents, they came to our local festivals, and were always around town,” said mayor Andrés Moñino. “Sometimes they went back to the UK to visit their children, and other times the children came here.”

 

Now, with more than 40 days gone and no new developments, the atmosphere in Jacarilla is one of sadness and confusion. “It’s as if the earth has swallowed her up,” the mayor said.

 

Residents are still hoping for answers, but the longer the silence continues, the more unsettling the mystery becomes.
