The Region of Murcia is set to approve a reduction in Personal Income Tax (‘Impuesto sobre la Renta de las Personas Físicas’ or IRPF) by 4.1%.

This was announced by the regional president, Fernando López Miras, against a backdrop of conservative-led autonomous communities such as Madrid and Andalusia choosing to unilaterally reduce or abolish taxes, to the consternation of Spain’s central government.

While Andalusia is scrapping its Wealth Tax, making it a more attractive place for foreigners to buy property, Murcia has so far not committed to doing the same, although experts say it may only be a matter of time.

Precisely the question to the regional president on the rise in prices will be asked in plenary session by the Partido Popular.

On his Twitter page, López Miras wrote, “We continue to lower taxes so that families do not bear the increased costs due to inflation.”

Earlier this month, the regional government announced that the 2023 budget would include a tax cut, and this 4.1% reduction in the IRPF is an advance of just one of the expected measures.

Anyone who has to pay personal income tax in Spain – which includes any resident who has income, even if that money comes from overseas – will benefit from the planned tax reduction, although not until 2023 as the IRPF deadline to submit tax returns for the 2022 fiscal year has already finished.

According to the figures advanced by President López Miras at the general assembly of the Croem, the tax cut would mean an average saving of around 20 euros each for up to 600,000 taxpayers in the Region.
