Municipal elections 2023: Mazarron candidate lists published
The political parties’ candidate lists for the municipal elections on May 28 have been published
The candidate lists for the political parties standing in the Mazarrón municipal election (which includes Camposol) on May 28 2023 have been published preparations continue for the start of the official campaign.
Unlike the UK, where the electorate votes for a single candidate, in Spain a type of proportional representation is deployed where each voter casts their vote for a party. In the case of Mazarrón there are 21 seats on the Council, so each party fields at least 21 candidates (reserves can also be listed in case a candidate drops out).
In simple terms the more votes a party receives the more of their candidates will take one of the 21 council seats. It would be unheard of for a party to win all 21, but only a simple majority of seats is required (11 in the case of Mazarrón) to take control of the council. That party can then name its councillors to take charge of one of more of the various council departments.
Parties which do not attain enough seats (unless there is a coalition) become opposition councillors without any direct control over council decisions. Parties which do not reach the required percentage of votes (around 5%) do not qualify for a seat.
Mazarrón has not had a single party with a governing majority since the election of 2007: since 2011 all ruling councils have been coalitions.
In the upcoming Mazarrón municipal election 6 parties are standing. Apart from the two current coalition parties, PSOE and UIDM, the others are PP, IU, Por Mi Región and Vox. Although a choice of 6 lists may seem a little confusing, in both 2019 and 2015 there were 10 parties standing!
Below are the candidate lists for the 6 parties (showing 2019 results where applicable)
