Mula witnesses the earliest blooming of almond trees across all of Europe
Sky-high winter temperatures have led to several valuable crops blossoming too early in the Region of Murcia

The picturesque town of Mula in northwest Murcia has already seen the first blooms of almond trees, signalling the start of the annual MulaFlor 2024, which celebrates these stunning trees.
Despite the mid-winter heatwave that has threatened crop growth throughout the Region, Mula's crops have timed their growth to perfection, much to the delight of visitors who flock to the area each year to marvel at the breathtaking sight.
In fact, Mula is the first area in all of Europe to welcome almond blossoms, according to mayor Juan Jesús Moreno García.
The flower festival is scheduled for this weekend, February 3 and 4, but almost two months of activities have been planned to celebrate the municipality, which include hiking routes, workshops, exhibitions and guided tours.
Mula has long been the municipality in Spain with the most land dedicated to the cultivation of almond trees and the mayor is excited to welcome the droves of tourists who will have an opportunity to “enjoy unparalleled landscapes that dress up to welcome the almond in a spectacle of incomparable beauty”.
The Region of Murcia boasts an impressive 74,274 hectares of almond trees, solidifying its position as the fourth largest producer in the country. The towns of Lorca, Mula and Jumilla are particularly renowned for their expertise in cultivating this crop, accounting for a remarkable 63.5% of the total organic production of almonds.
While the almonds have flowered right on time, the ongoing drought has wreaked havoc on many more crops in the Region of Murcia. Last week daytime temperatures reached an astonishing 28ºC and this unseasonable heat means that fruit and vegetable harvests will be earlier than normal and the flowering of some trees.
Moreover, the humidity and warm weather have resulted in very uneven growth and even double and triple fruits on some trees, further stressing the crops.
