ARCHIVED - Movistar reveals plans to offer 5G to the entire Region of Murcia by 2025
The telecommunications provider owned by Telefónica already offers 'ultrafast broadband' in 17 Murcian municipalities

Spain's largest provider of landline, broadband, mobile services, and pay TV has revealed plans to offer 5G coverage to the whole of the Region of Murcia within the next two years.
Telecommunications provider Movistar, owned by Telefónica, already provides ultra-broadband (fibre and/or 5G) in 700 MHz band in 17 Murcian municipalities, the latest connections having been established in Alcantarilla, Totana and Los Alcázares.
And by 2025, provided all goes to plan, the company's ultrafast coverage will reach Murcian towns of all sizes, from the largest, such as Cartagena, which has more than 213,000 inhabitants, to the smallest, such as Librilla with 5,300.
According to Telefónica, the 700 MHz band, also called low band, has "greater indoor penetration and universalises some of the characteristics of 5G communications such as low latency".
It complements the 3.5 GHz band, which Movistar also operates, and is ideal for services that require very high transmission speeds.
In a statement, the company said: "We recently completed our 5G spectrum with the acquisition of five 200 MHz blocks in the 2.6 GHz band for a total of 20 million euros, making us the highest bidder in the bidding process.
"With this concession, Telefónica consolidates its commitment and leadership in connectivity by combining the boost of 5G coverage with its extensive fibre network in Spain, reinforcing its commitment to the digitalisation here," it added.
This time last year, the company came under fire after a failure left thousands without coverage and television service rates were hiked.
