Minor earthquake in northern Murcia this morning

An earthquake measuring 2.9 on the Richter scale was felt by some residents of the Altiplano area of the Region of Murcia this Monday morning, September 18.

The earthquake, which was felt at 11.29 a.m. in the municipality of Yecla, was registered at a depth of three kilometres, in an area that is also close to Jumilla.

According to Spain’s National Geographic Institute (IGN), the tremor was of intensity II. Such small-scale quakes are frequent along this stretch of the Spanish coast and they rarely develop into anything larger or more dangerous.

One notable exception was the highly destructive 2011 earthquake in Lorca, which measured over 5 on the Richter scale and caused millions of euros’ worth of damage, as well as costing several people their lives.
