Mercadona maintains the top spot as favourite store in the Region of Murcia

Mercadona maintains the top spot as favourite store in the Region of Murcia

Food is big business in the Region of Murcia and the sector is in constant growth, with new Spar, Mercadona and Consum stores opening in recent weeks. However, in terms of the community’s favourite there is one clear winner, and Mercadona holds on to the top spot as the Region’s number one supermarket for the second year running.

According to the list published by Inforetail, the Valencian chain held an incredible 21.6% of the market share at the end of the first quarter of 2023, with 63 supermarkets covering almost 100,000 square metres of retail space.

Coming in a distant second is Spar Sureste, which has managed to corner 9.3% of the Murcian market with 135 stores spread over 43,064 square metres of commercial land.

And Carrefour limps into third place holding 8.8% of the market. The French chain now has 30 establishments in the Region and has actually been bumped up from fourth position last year.

Carrefour stole the spot from DIA, which comes in next with a very close 8.7% market share, 42,230 square metres of retail space and 70 points of sale in Murcia.

Somewhat surprisingly, Consum supermarkets only managed to scrape fifth place this year even though the brand runs 48 supermarkets in the Region. It’s 38,935 square metres has nabbed 8.4% of the total share.

These five distributors account for 56.8% of the retail space in Murcia. Overall, the Region now has 461,232 square metres of supermarket floor, a 1.1% increase on last year.

At the end of the first financial quarter, Mercadona's President Juan Roig has thanked its loyal customers, who he refers to as “Bosses”, and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to Spain with the investment of 100 million euros to different initiatives in the fields of Entrepreneurship, Training, Sport, Entertainment, Art and Culture.

“Knowledge and money bring happiness…if you share them,” he concluded.
