Mazarron Town Hall begins work to restore access track at the beach of Percheles

Disputes over ownership of the track and surrounding land have led to controversy at Percheles in recent years

The Town Hall of Mazarrón has begun work this week on restoring the access track which leads to the popular unspoilt beach of Percheles, in the south-west of the municipality, following a resolution passed in a full session of the council on May 18.

There has been a good deal of controversy in recent years over whether the track is private property or is owned by the council, but a Town Hall press release states that the access track is inscribed on the municipal register of properties and rights owned by the Town Hall, and it is clear that the administration is not expecting any valid legal objections to be made.

The beach of Percheles is considered by some to be the most attractive of the 33 listed in Mazarrón, and for those coming from some distance away is best reached via Cañada de Gallego. Officially, the beach measures 290 metres by 16, and with fine, grey sand it is hugely popular in summer: its pine trees provide some shelter from the sun and a few years ago it was awarded “Blue Flag” status.

Unfortunately, this was suspended in 2022 when the council decided not to apply for a renewal of the Blue Flag in the light of disputes over the ownership of the access track and the right to allow public parking.
